Hazing is not condoned by Alpha Phi Alpha.

Dear Brother:
I want to take a moment to address some recent incidents of alleged hazing that have taken place, and assure every “good standing” brother of Alpha, that the leadership is moving swiftly to identify, charge and prosecute any person who has violated our standing orders or our Constitution or brought harm to the fraternity or any of our members. As we have in the past, we are now too cooperating with law enforcement in effort to bring to justice those who have violated the law.
For years Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. has taken extraordinary measures to prevent hazing. Members of the Fraternity know our position on hazing and they know the consequences for violating those rules. We have clearly defined it for everyone. We have had training on the issue. We have taken legal action in the past against those who have violated our rules. We cannot say this more clearly and emphatically: young men in the prime of their lives involved in brutality serve no purpose.
Hazing is not condoned by Alpha Phi Alpha.
We will take every legal means at our disposal, both civil and criminal, to charge and bring to justice any person who commits a crime and tarnishes our good name in the process. Internally any chapter or fraternity member that participates in any activity that violates our rules and regulations can expect to face stiff penalties including suspension and/or expulsion. Further, as a matter of our process for membership intake, any man who suspects, or witnesses any suspicious activity are obligated and encouraged to let the fraternity know. We applaud any young man who exposes hazing at any college or university.
Alpha Phi Alpha continues to aggressively confront the issue of hazing and has engaged in programmatic elements which provide leadership the tools to recognize, prevent and address hazing. Through our participation in the hazing institute held by and working with the Association of Fraternity/Sorority advisors (AFA) it is our goal to work with campus leaders to assure that our chapters and members on these campus communities are promoting the values and mission of our organization. In doing so, we aim to increase the positive impact of our existence, which is outlined in Alpha Phi Alpha’s Mission Statement.
This fraternity was founded 103 years ago. During that time we have been at the forefront of the Civil Rights Movement and other important causes. We have played integral roles in the advancement of people in all walks of life. We have been mentors to boys through Boy Scouts of America. We have a strong association with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America. We are the largest fundraiser of similar organizations for the March of Dimes. Most recently, we initiated the building of a memorial in Washington, D.C. to honor our most famous member, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
We are proud to be members and I am personally proud to be the leader of this organization that has meant so much to the fabric of America. However, we are all saddened that there are those who have performed acts that damage the good we have achieved. We do not plan to let a “few bad apples” destroy a century of leadership and service. We will help the law put them where they belong and we will continue to move onward and upward.
